Is it the “Great Resignation” or the “Great Realization?”

We’ve been hearing for months about the “Great Resignation” and how people are quitting their jobs in record numbers. There are many opinions out there about the impact of what’s happening, but all the focus has been on the “quitting” part of the scenario. And I think they’re missing an important point.

2020 brought on a whole host of new, unexpected, and unwelcome changes, as well as some unique opportunities. With the pandemic getting progressively worse, we were suddenly stuck inside and if you’re anything like me, experienced a roller coaster of human emotions on a daily basis. Being stuck inside also presented us with a need to get creative in how we lived our days. People used the commute time they saved to learn new things. To bake a ton of sourdough bread. To spend time with their kids. To generate new ideas and envision new ways of working in a pandemic world.

Ringing in 2021, there was a palpable sense of relief. We’d made it through, we had a vaccine, we could go back to restaurants, go on vacation, walk outside without a mask on – things were getting back to normal…and then the pandemic had other ideas. But even as we reluctantly trudged back inside, a realization dawned that maybe “back to normal” wasn’t enough anymore.

2021 made us pause in our race back to “February 2020 normal” to consider – Is this really what I want from life?

I think, collectively, we’ve realized a new clarity about what is most important to us. With the start of a new year, we can optimistically envision how things could be different and are ready to take action and make the changes we actually want in our lives.

So, it makes sense that people are “quitting” - “back to normal” isn’t going to cut it and there’s a collective longing for something better. As 2022 takes off, I feel a sense of readiness in the air for bold action. A readiness to challenge the normal and do things differently so we can prioritize what is truly important to us, to find a new way of operating in the world that fulfills us as whole people.

What did you realize is most important to you? What would make your life more fulfilling? What action are you ready to take?

What I’ve realized is that I have a passion for coaching with people who are ready to discover what’s important and are longing to take bold action to live a more fulfilling life. If this sounds like you, let’s talk!
